This 2 hour self-study course summarizes the California Dental Practice Act. This course satisfies the Dental Board of California biennial requirement for 2-hours of continuing units on the Responsibilities and Requirements for Prescribing Schedule II Opioid Drugs for dentist license renewal. Ellison Dental Consulting is an approved mandatory course provider for the state of California. After registering for the course, you will receive an email with the self-study learning packet. You may complete the corresponding post-course exam and course evaluation using the link provided in the email or print out, complete, scan, and email the provided copies in the learning packet to the email address provided. Both evaluation and exam must be completed to earn CE credits. Once your exam is scored, you will receive your CE certificate via email (usually 1-2 days). Course Objective: The objective of this course is to educate dentists on the regulatory responsibilities involved when prescribing Schedule II opioid in practice. The course covers definitions, laws, best practices for dental pain management, and office procedures for identifying and managing vulnerable or substance abuse disorder patients.

- Know the definitions of drug misuse, drug abuse, and drug addiction and be able to explain the difference between each.
- Be able to identify drug seeking behaviors.
- Know the requirements for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances including the use of the CURES database.
- Be familiar with the recommendations for dental practice procedures in the management of vulnerable and substance disorder patients.
